I have been using Milkman Instant Lowfat Dry Milk for years - always
carried it on our 38' trawler - but lately this product seems to have
disappeared from the markets and other brands just don't cut it!! Use
to buy it from Publix but they dropped it (in Gainesville and Ocala,
FL area), then bought it from Albertsons and they have dropped it too.
Checked Winn Dixie, Food Lion, etc - no luck.

Does any store still sell this product in the Gainesville or Ocala FL
area, or does anyone know how to contact the mfgr?

Thanks in advance
Robert

I am sure there are other sources but REI has it via retail or mail
order:

Just to fill in other readers, the advantage of Milkman is that it
reconstitutes to make a good facsimile of 1/2% milkfat milk, rather
than the no-fat milk that most powder makes. Despite the milkfat
content, it keeps about forever in its sealed bags -- each makes 2
qts. as I recall -- and so I've kept a stash of it for trips.

We also lack retail outlets for it in Michigan, so I too have gotten
it from REI; out West, the Safeway chain stores seem to stock it.

Happy trails, DVB

Really?? We still have our old supply so haven't gone looking for it
lately. It is the best.

I bought it about 6 mos ago at a Publix in Orlando. I hope they still have it.
It's about as fundamental to my backpacking menu as Ramen noodles.

Just received from Publix:
"Thank you for your email. We appreciate our customers taking the time to
contact us. In regards to your inquiry, I have contacted our corporate
buying office regarding the Milkman Instant Lowfat Dry Milk. They have
informed me we have not carried this item in over a year. Unfortunately, we
do not buy from this vendor any longer, so we are unable to fill any special
orders."

I did a google search on "milkman instant dry milk" and got a number of
responses. The ones I followed lead to REI. There is also a discussion
indexed from the rec.backcountry news group. :) Who makes this stuff anyway?

You live in FL?
Shoot, you can send out a net SOS like Craig S.

I'd mail you 3-4 packages myself.
You could be set with powdered milk for the rest of your life.

How long does Milkman last anyway? I bought a big box of it when I
was making a cross-country drive. Then I stopped eating foods and
using recipes on the trail which required milk, so most of the packets
have been sitting for years and years and years.

Recently I started using milk on the trail again (e.g. I used to never
drink tea but someone showed me the advantages of having a cup of hot
tea and milk and sugar to finish off a meal -- use the teabag to clean
the dishes). So I pulled out those old packets and they seem
perfectly fine.

Dried milk of course is supposed to last a long time in general. But
Milkman's taste advantage is that it contains milkfat, which I thought
might decrease its shelf life.

So I know that this is an old discussion chain but I was googling around for any info I could find on Milkman. A new company called Marron Foods now owns the brand and is preparing to bring it back to retail chains. For now it is available on their website at milkmanmilk.com in single pouches and cases of 12. I hope it will make its way into retail soon.
