Anyone know an web source for canvas water bag coolers that work by
evaporation? Old timers like me recall these invariably white linen or
canvas one or two gallon bags that one soaked throughly before filling
and hung in a shady but windy spot.

Usually there was an on-off spout at the bottom.

I've seen surplus Lister Bags for sale but these are platoon sized (36
gallon) and much too large to be convenient. I would like to buy some
of these 2 gallon low technology water coolers.

Thanks in advance.

2 gallon low technology water coolers
I found these a while ago in a local Army Navy surplus store. Ask for
canvas desert water bags.

Good luck

I have a couple of those. We used them in the desert all the time.
They work really well when you hang them from the door mirrors on
pickup trucks. When running a pack string you hang a couple of them
from the pack saddles. The outside gets caked with mud but that just
makes them work better in my opinion. The water in them was often 20 to
30 degrees cooler than the outside air. Don't hang them from the horn
of the saddle though as the water is not good for the leather. In the
desert I have two of the big round canteen ( 2.5 qts. that I hang from
the saddle horn. I carry that much because when I stop to take a hit
of water I also make sure that the horse gets a hit. Of course his
his is much bigger than mine. I don't know if it does him that much
good, (I ride a gelding), but I have never seen him turn down a
little snort.

The canvas lister bags work that way to. You hang them from a tree
limb, pour in the water. There are valves at the bottom that allow
the water to be poured into cups or canteens. The new G.I. lister bags
are O.D. rubber lined and don't cool the water. In fact the Olive
Drab color absorbs solar radiation like a bitch. The old lister bags
were just canvas and allowed evaporation to cool the water. Before
World War 1 they were white in color.

I have one of the old style lister bags with the canvas top cover
flap. It looks like a little tent that covers that attaches to the
top rope ring, then drapes down over the bag. My bag is white so
the sides do not absorb that much heat from the sun but the air
evaporates the water from the water soaked canvas to allow cooling
of the water in the bag.

When working on my property in South Eastern Oregon I set the bag
up in a tripod and fill it with water. It holds about 30 gallons
of water.

You could try getting the horses their very own purpose designed water bags:

You can generally find them at any large army surplus store. Or you
can find all kind of neat stuff like that at altrec.com.

Might want to google on "Lister bags" if you want the large, economy
size...the military got rid of all of theirs several years ago as they
could not be made resistant to bio/chem attacks...

I ran into this doing a google search.

DESERT WATER BAGS

From: Dave Hoots <***@tandem.com>
Newsgroups: misc.survivalism
Subject: Desert water bags & survival tins
Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 16:42:10 -0600

Folks,

Awhile back some people were interested in desert water bags and
"survival tins" (akin to cigar tins).

I've found a source for both:

Army & Navy Surplus Store 3524 S. Broadway
Englewood, CO (303) 789-1827

I have no relationship to the store, other than being a satisfied customer.

The desert water bags are canvas bags, often with two grommets
at the top corners, used to hang on front of jeeps (or other
vehicles) while traveling through the desert. The water was
kept cool through slight evaporation while traveling (air flow and
all that). The store sells them for $12.00.

The tins are two-piece aluminum, measuring 6.75 " x 4.25 " x 1.75 ",
and goes for $3.49. It has two small handles at each end. It's akin to
the British survival tins. I've found it useful for cooking
(the tight-fitting top becomes a griddle, the bottom a pot).

Well, that's about it. If you need more info re: this products,
email me.

As I said before, I have *no* connection to the store; I simply
browse there from time to time. I found these, and thought that
those folks who expressed an interest in these things might want
to know a source. Dave Hoots

Because they just KNOW someone has been waiting to receive their wisdom
